Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my child have to be to start Irish Dancing?
The Montague School of Irish Dancing accepts students 5 years of age and older. Our oldest dancer is 18 years old. Adult lessons are not currently available.

What is the average class size?
Class sizes range from 4-15 dancers. There are about 30 dancers in the school.

Where can I get Irish Dance shoes?
Dancers are not required to have Irish Dance shoes until the middle of their first year. Until that time, socks or ballet slippers are acceptable. Hardshoes are not required until the middle of the 2nd year. Ghillies (girls’ soft shoes), split sole jazz shoes (boys’ soft shoes), and hardshoes are all available for sale online, ranging from $40-$120. Often, these shoes can be found used and less expensive from our school’s Used Shoe bin.

How do I know which class my dancer should sign up for? Dancers start as Beginners and progress through class levels up to Advanced.  Classes are grouped by experience, skill level, and age.  Class assignment is determined by Katie based upon the best interest of each dancer.

Is there an end-of-the-year recital? Our school’s hooley is held in the spring. A hooley is a fundraiser event with live Irish music, food and drinks, and a lot of dancing. We showcase our dancers at this event, highlighting each class. Family and friends are invited to join us as we show off everything we’ve learned throughout the year.
